What is Yoga Nidra?
Article written by: Jemma Black - Hatha Yoga Teacher
Although this practise has had an upsurge in popularity in the last few years, Yoga Nidra is as ancient in its roots as Yoga itself, and dates back in written history to 700 BCE, however, in verbal history, it dates back as far as 1000 BCE.
Yoga Nidra is one of the practises where we work on the mind, and deep layers of the subtle body, rather than the physical body. Very little, if any, movement is involved.
Often referred to as ‘the sleep of the Yogi’, Yoga Nidra literally translates to Yogic sleep. For this practise we get super cosy, gathering a variety of pillows, blankets and cushions for optimum comfort and relaxation, (we call this a Nidra nest!) and lay in a supine position and close our eyes.
The practise itself takes us on a journey of sensory awareness through the body, into the breath and into the visual field. It’s a guided, meditative relaxation that induces deep rest, and allows the brain to shift through different brain wave states.
It takes some people, depending on how well they can relax, to the hypnogogic state, where, if the student wishes to, new affirmations or intentions can be placed to make changes in old habits, mindsets or attitudes.
Yoga Nidra can help to relieve and alleviate anxiety and low mood and can help overcome insomnia. At the very least this practise leaves you with a sense of peace and calm.
I offer short versions of Yoga Nidra at the end of my Restorative Classes which are held in Torryburn, once a month. Yoga Nidra is the most perfect complement to restorative practice and this session is like a full body massage for the soul!
Alternatively, I offer a full Yoga Nidra (a whole hour dedicated to this awesome technique) as a stand-alone practise delivered direct to the comfort of your own home, via Zoom. This is a great way to experience the full effects of this ancient practise and not have to drive home again at the end. You can wear your jammies and go directly to your couch (or to bed) after wards!
My next Yoga Nidra on Zoom is on Thursday 5th September at 7pm and my next Restorative Class is on Friday 20th September at 7.30pm, in Torryburn. Both are available to book on my website: www.theyogahutfife.co.uk
