Why Sleep is Important

During sleep, the body undergoes important processes that promote our physical and mental health, this includes cell and tissue repair and hormone regulation.
Interesting sleep facts:
Sleep occurs in cycles that last around 90-120 minutes
Sleep is crucial for physical recovery and repair. It allows the body to rest and recuperate, repairing tissues, muscles and organs
Sleep also plays an important role in forming memories and learning. During sleep, the brain processes and stores information acquired during the day, contributing to memory retention and cognitive function
Sleep helps regulate hormones that are involved in growth, metabolism and stress. A good nights sleep is essential for hormonal balance and overall health
Sleep is also important for our emotional wellbeing and health. It can improve mood, reduce stress, enhance creativity and our problem solving abilities
A healthy sleep pattern is vital for our overall health and quality of life. According to mental health-uk.org, 1 in 5 people aren't getting enough sleep. So what can we do to ensure we get a restful and rejuvenating sleep every night?
Here are some helpful tips:
Keep to a regular sleep schedule, even at the weekend - Doing this will ensure you get a better quality sleep. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day sets your body's internal clock, your body then expects sleep at a certain time night after night.
Ditch the phone at bed time - The light in electronic devices stimulates the brain and also supresses the release of melatonin, the hormone that aids sleep.
Avoid caffeine after mid-afternoon- Caffeine is a stimulant that can hinder you getting a restful sleep, alcohol and nicotine too close to bedtime can also have the same negative effects.
Book a regular massage - A regular massage can promote relaxation by decreasing levels of the stress hormone cortisol while also increasing the serotonin and dopamine levels, these are neurotransmitters that stabilise mood. Using massage to decrease stress and promote relaxation can help you sleep better.
Turn your room into a sleep sanctuary- Your bedroom should only be used for sleeping in, not answering work emails or binging on the latest Netflix series. Create a space that is peaceful and inviting, treat yourself to some soft sumptuous bedding in soft muted colours like gentle blues, greens and neutrals, these are less likely to stimulate the brain and more likely to promote rest.
